The Studio
North Pole Studio is a safe community space and a supported professional studio program for both emerging and established artists with autism and I/DD to connect and create. The studio is a place where neurodiversity is not only accepted but valued; where diverse perspectives and experiences are recognized as a strength.
We are located in NW Marine Art Works, Portland’s largest collective of professional artist studios. In this space, North Pole Studio artists are active members of the arts community and access professional development opportunities through exhibition, collaboration, and mentorship. Our partnership with NW Marine Art Works intentionally facilitates inclusion and engagement between North Pole Studio artists and the arts community.
The space was designed in collaboration with founding artist, Davis Wohlford. Davis is autistic and the studio environment is thoughtfully organized to support diverse sensory needs. Our 1200 sq/ft studio space has individual work spaces, is quiet, and embedded with pictorial supports.
In the studio, artists are provided with the time, space, and tools to create work that is personally meaningful and relevant. The studio is supported by Art Facilitators and volunteers who are available to support artists as they explore, develop, and expand their creative practice. Empowering artists’ self-determination is a core value of North Pole Studio and each artist is wholly engaged in all decision-making around their work.
Davis Wohlford identified the North Pole Studio’s values as compassion, kindness, honesty, bravery, and most of all, magic. Our community strives to practice these values every day.
Studio Programs
Main Studio
Main Studio Program artists have a weekly studio practice at NW Marine Work. In the studio, artists access a personal work area, direct support from Art Facilitators and artist volunteers, art supplies and tools, support creating and maintaining a digital portfolio, and professional development opportunities including exhibiting and selling work.
Exhibiting Artist
Exhibiting Artists are represented by the North Pole Studio, but do not work in the studio space at NW Marine Works. Each artist has an individual profile on the website, and the North Pole supports the Artist’s career by promoting and facilitating the sale of their work.
*This program is accessible to out-of-state artists
Classes & Workshops
Weekly art classes are for artists ages 16+ and explore a variety of techniques and materials. This program provides an opportunity for Transition-aged youth to connect with like-minded peers and explore a professional studio environment.
